A relationship is pushed to the extreme Joanna HoggThe fascinating drama Memory. Honor Swinton Byrne (daughter of Tilda Swinton) performs in a revealing performance as a film student and deals with her unreliable boyfriend (Tom Burke) In the 1980s. It was one of the best movies I saw at the Sundance Film Festival this year, but it's also a movie that will not be for everyone. Watch Memory trailer below.

This trailer is fast, dramatic and exciting. Joanna Hogg's new film is almost like a thriller. But … that's not what this movie is. Instead of, Memory is a deliberately rhythmic drama that unfolds over a period of time without any real urgency. In other words, it's slow. But that's not a bad thing. Slow movies can often be pretty wonderful if filming and performance are up to par. What they are definitely here. Honor Swinton Byrne is outstanding in the lead, and Tom Burke is just as great as his troubled boyfriend. Here is the synopsis:

A shy but ambitious film student (Honor Swinton Byrne) begins to find her voice as an artist while navigating in a turbulent court with a charismatic but untrustworthy man (Tom Burke). She defies her protective mother (Tilda Swinton) and her worried friends as she sinks deeper and deeper into an intense and emotionally tense relationship that is dangerously close to the destruction of her dreams.

When I saw Memory at Sundance, I was pierced. But the rest of the audience did not share my enthusiasm – I saw several people go out, apparently tired of the slow pace of the film. But I have persevered and I am happy to have done it. As I wrote in my review:

An occasional audience will probably reject Memory. Some moviegoers may even be impatient with the daily approach presented here. But the more you give to the film, the more you'll get. By the time the credits arrive, you will feel as if you had spent a whole year living, breathing people, not characters. The end result is beautiful.

Despite the walkouts that I talked about, Sundance still won Memory the grand prize of the Sundance jury. In addition, director Joanna Hogg is already considering a sequel to the film, which will also be distributed by A24. A continuation planned even before the release of the first film? Eat your heart, cinematic universe Marvel!

Memory opens in theaters May 17, 2019.
