Corporal Raymond Amegashie
A policeman and three other people were sentenced to a total prison sentence of 70 years by the Accra Circuit Court for stealing a supermarket in Nungua in Accra on December 12, 2017.
During the trial, convicts – Corporal Raymond Amegashie, Ibrahim Ayirebo, Bright Dorkanu and Stanley Akorli – were reported to have entered the supermarket amid sporadic gunfire and stole the owner of 45,000 GH ¢ and 1,000 ¢.
Cpl Amegashie was sentenced yesterday to 20 years in prison; Ayirebo will serve an 18-year prison sentence, while Dorkanu and Akorli will each serve 16 years in prison.
The four men pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to steal and rob, but the court, chaired by Mr. Aboagye Tandoh, found them guilty of both counts.
Each of the convicted prisoners is to serve the sentence for both charges, which will occur concurrently.

Judgment
In his judgment, Mr. Tandoh concluded that the prosecution had presented evidence to establish the guilt of the accused beyond a reasonable doubt.
According to him, the evidence on the record indicated that the four had played respective roles in the robbery, with Cpl Amegashie acting as leader of the gang.
He added that it had also been established that the gang had planned to rob a mobile money seller on December 11, 2017, but that he had failed, he instead stole the supermarket on Dec. 12 2017.
"I found all the accused guilty of conspiracy and robbery offenses," he said.
Mr. Tandoh further stated that the sentences reflected the roles played by each of the convicts, those who played a major role receiving more years of imprisonment.
The reaction of the condemned sympathizers in the courtroom to the fate of their loved ones is an interesting aspect of yesterday's judgment.
After the judgment, some of them burst into tears, while others exchanged insults.

According to the facts presented by the prosecutor, Chief Inspector Kwabena Adu, the plaintiff, Helen Asante, is a trader who operates a supermarket around the Nungua branch of the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB).
Cpl Amegashie was badigned to the Tema Regional SWAT Unit; Ayirebo resided at Tema Community 1; Dorkanu resided in Ashiaman, while Akorli lived in Tema Golf City.
According to the prosecutor, on December 12, 2017, Helen was in her supermarket around 9 pm. when she was attacked by the convicts.
The four men, he said, drove to the supermarket by taxi, entered the store after sporadic gunfire and managed to steal the owner for 45,000 GH ¢ and 1,000 USD.
"The thieves, after having made their flight, got into the taxi and flew quickly to Tema," added the prosecutor.
Chief Inspector Adu stated that Ayirebo, Dorkanu and Akorli were arrested at the Abattoir community police checkpoint and that $ 19,942 and $ 600 had been recovered from them after the owner of the store had complained to the police.
The prosecutor explained that Cpl Amegashie had managed to escape with his AK 47 rifle and had spent the night at the roundabout of the Tema Highway.
He returned his rifle the next day.
He was, however, caught by the Tsopoli police fence in his escape attempt.
