Openreach is on track to give broadband access to three million homes and businesses by the end of next year, the company said.

It has reached a "milestone" by making technology available to more than a million locals, one year after the launch of its "full fiber" program.

Engineers installed about 2.6 million kilometers of fiber, using hundreds of heavy machinery and 3,000 excavators.

Openreach has announced the extension of its Fiber First program to new sites, mainly in Northern Ireland.

Clive Shelley, General Manager of Openreach, said, "Our ambition is to provide the best digital connectivity possible to all across the country. The progress we have made to date shows that we are keeping our promise. "
