Operation Vanguard stops 50 illegal miners

Fifty illegal miners were arrested by Operation Vanguard, the team responsible for putting an end to the activities of illegal miners in the country.

The arrests occurred in two separate operations in the western and eastern regions during the past week.

Those arrested include; Chinese, Guinean and Burkinabe nationals.

Although the premises were turned over to the police for possible prosecution, foreign nationals and confiscated excavators were handed over to the Interministerial Committee on Illegal Mining for action.

The Vanguard team, however, lamented the support of some local residents for housing illegal miners, which it says is hampering its operations.

Another action in the central region led to the destruction of ninety-four changfan machines used for mining.
