OPS calls for vaccination against yellow fever

WASHINGTON, February 2, MCC – The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) urges travelers to ensure that they are vaccinated against yellow fever at least 10 days before traveling to areas where the virus is circulating.

In a statement, the PAHO Regional Office for the Americas of the World Health Organization (WHO) urged countries with yellow fever to continue to vaccinate populations at risk.

He said between January 2017 and December 2018, seven countries, including Suriname, had reported cases of yellow fever, and again this year Brazil and Peru had notified confirmed cases in 2019.

PAHO / WHO has stated that it will continue to urge Member States to take all necessary measures to ensure that travelers are well informed about the risks and prevention measures taken against yellow fever, including vaccination. . "Travelers should take precautions to avoid mosquito bites and consult a doctor if they get sick during or after their trip."

Yellow fever is an acute viral haemorrhagic fever that can lead to death. It is preventable with a safe, effective and accessible vaccine. Periodically, and for reasons difficult to predict, the cycle of sylvatic yellow fever causes large outbreaks in monkeys (epizootics).

OPS stated that urban transmission of yellow fever occurred when the virus was transmitted from man to man by the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
