The isolated islands off the north coast of Scotland have won the title, having been finalists in the last two years of the survey on the quality of life in Halifax.

A series of criteria were examined to establish rankings, including work, housing, education, health and how people feel.

The islands are also a relatively affordable place to live, with an average housing price of £ 173,349, or 5.2 times the average annual income, compared to the national average ratio of 7.3.

Second place in the quality of life survey went to Richmondshire in North Yorkshire, supported by excellent results in personal well-being, low crime rates and low traffic.

London has only two regions in the top 50 – Westminster (15) and Richmond-upon-Thames (40).

Some regions in the South performed well in terms of employment, income, life expectancy, health and weather, while Northern countries had better results in terms of affordability, traffic and overcrowding.
