Yaw Osafo Maafo, Prime Minister
Prime Minister, Yaw Osafo-Maafo, has called on the country's engineers to ensure the optimization of resources for all engineering projects in the country.
He made this appeal in a speech read on his behalf at the opening ceremony of the 2019 Ghana Institute of Engineering (GhEU) Annual Conference at the Volta Hotel, Akosombo, on Wednesday, March 27. 2019.
The theme of the four-day conference was "Engineering and Innovation: A Catalyst for Ghana Beyond Aid".
"We hope that your institution will ensure that all your members work within the limits of the law and in the respect of the ethics that your members are supposed to respect. If necessary, I urge you to punish lost members. We hope to work with you to ensure the optimization of resources for all engineering projects in the country, "said Osafo Maafo.
The president of GhIE, Ing. Steve A. Amoaning-Yankson explained that the importance of the conference was paramount as it put an end to the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Ghana Engineering Institution.
"It is very informative that we are meeting here in Akosombo, site of the world's largest artificial lake, Lake Volta, created by the construction of the Akosombo Dam several decades ago. It is one of the great engineering achievements of the post-independence era; Akosombo is the place where we are here today to celebrate this event, "Ing. Amoaning-Yankson added.
In his remarks, the executive director of the Ghana Institute of Engineers, Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong said that engineers should play a leading role in developing innovations for a sustainable, resilient and green infrastructure that promotes smart living by identifying low-carbon energy sources. and implementing programs that recognize the phenomenon of depletion of natural resources.
Alhaji Abubakar Saddique Boniface, Minister of State in the President's Office, challenged the country's engineers to ensure that our beaches are well-equipped to attract tourists to the country and earn foreign exchange earnings.
Fraternal messages were delivered by the President of the Federation of African Engineering Organizations (FAEO), ing. Martin Manuhwa, President of the Federation of West African Engineers Organizations (WAFEO), Engr. Otis Anyaeji and other professional bodies.
The occasion was also used to kick off the 20th anniversary celebration of Women in Engineering (WINE) by cutting their birthday cake with pumps and pageantry.
The Deputy Director General (Services) of the Volta River Authority (VRA), Ing. Kofi Allis, the host of the conference, said that good technical practice could and should be a prerequisite for any developing country and added that recent road accidents are not a good one sign. He urged engineers to ensure that all engineering work is done properly, on time and in a timely manner to reduce future tragedies.
Among those present at the ceremony were: Deputy Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, elected President of GhIE, Ing. Leslie Ayeh, outgoing president of GhIE, Ing. Ms. Carlien Bou-Chedid, who is now President-Elect of AWEO, GhIE Board Members, Past Presidents of GhIE and the Nigerian Engineering Society, Representatives from Rwanda, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, and ### 39 other countries of West Africa, as well as other professional bodies of Ghana.
A minute of silence was observed for the over 686 casualties in Cyclone Idai in Mozambique and more than 70 in two recent separate accidents on the Kintampo-Techiman and Accra-Cape roads.
