This year's ceremony was fraught with challenges from Kevin Hart on a homophobia quarrel and leaving the Oscars without a host for the first time in 30 years, to charges of badual misconduct against Bohemian Rhapsody's director, Bryan Singer.

Today, the prediction of the Oscars has become as much a science as an art, writes our critic Helen O. Hara. The type of film nominations, including Best Director and Best Editing, combined with previous awards, including the various Guild Awards awarded to industry professionals, give a much shorter list of probable winners than the eight or ten best image candidates suggest.

The Golden Globes are a poor indicator of the winners of the best movie and are only slightly stronger in the categories of actors, even if they give themselves two chances each year by dividing their detractors between the categories "Drama" and "Comedy / Musical". The Screen Actors Guild Awards are better predictors of acting awards, although their overall grand prize rarely matches that of the best film. And the recipient of the Toronto Film Festival's audience award has had a much better record at the Oscars in recent years than the winners of the film festivals in Cannes, Berlin and Venice.

The Producers Guild Award for Best Feature is a historically strong predictor: the Academy has chosen the same film for the best film 20 times out of 30. But this relationship seems to be weakening this year. The PGA has gone to Green Book, which does not look like an Oscar favorite since its director, Peter Farrelly, is not nominated for the best director (traditionally a bad sign for the chances of the Best Film candidate, to some exceptions). PGA's best documentary winner, Will not You Be My Neighbor, has not even been nominated for an Oscar. And the Screen Actor's Guild guild trophy in Best Overall category, another occasional indicator of Best Film (though its success rate is less impressive), was awarded to Black Panther, a movie that looks a lot like a particular case of the race for the best movie.

Learn more about the science of predictions of Oscar winners, below:

The race for Best Film seems incredibly close this year. Will Roma win or will the judges favor one of the two nominees: A star is born or Bohemian Rhapsody? Can Black Panther become the first superhero movie to win this honor?

Take a look at all our forecasts for the night:

Hello and welcome to The Independent's blog for the 2019 Oscars!

From here the closing of the biggest night of the film, we will present the latest updates, news, photos and reactions to the Academy Awards, which will take place tonight at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, Los Angeles.

Jennifer Lopez, Awkwafina, Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Tina Fey, Whoopi Goldberg, Brie Larson, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Amandla Stenberg, Charlize Theron, Tessa Thompson and Constance Wu are among the stars who will distribute the statuettes.

This year's ceremony was fraught with controversies that began well before the event. Kevin Hart was named and then sacked after several old tweets in which the comedian expressed homophobic views, leaving the 2019 ceremony unchallenged for the first time in 30 years.

Columbia Pictures

4/47 The great Lebowski (1988)

The generosity of the Academy towards the Coen brothers culminated when no country for old men beat blood in one of the races of the best film closest to the ceremony.
