The Traditional Council of Osu, led by the Supreme Chief of the Traditional Zone of Osu and the Speaker of the House of Chiefs of the Greater Accra Region, Nii Okwei Kinka Dowuona VI, called on all Ghanaians to act with respect laws of the land to ensure a peaceful atmosphere. .
The Council said the acts of violence and lawlessness preceding and following the declaration of the December 7, 2020 election results are not Ghanaian and tend to undermine the peace, and therefore urged all aggrieved persons to seek redress through established rules.
A statement released by the council on Friday condemning what it called “recent acts of election-related violence taking place in different parts of the country and in particular in Greater Accra,” the leaders said as the 2020 elections in Ghana were widely hailed as a success and hailed by “national and international observers as credible, transparent, free and fair”, which “further deepened Ghana’s democratic credentials”, she nevertheless acknowledges the fact that all people are not satisfied with the results or the outcome of the elections.
“However, we must remember that we live in a country founded on a constitution and governed by laws. Therefore, any disagreement regarding any aspect of the electoral process must be addressed and resolved using the appropriate procedures prescribed by law, ”the leaders advised.
According to the chiefs, they are appalled, as are many other Ghanaians, “by the events that took place before and after the declaration of the results by the Election Commission” and “believe that these events will undermine peace and fundamental freedoms on which our country is founded and the one we all enjoy today.
“We therefore unequivocally condemn the acts of violence and lawlessness linked to the declaration of the results of the elections which are being perpetrated. It is not the reflection of Ghana that we want to build for future generations, ”the chefs advised.
“However, we must remember that we live in a country founded on a constitution and governed by laws. Therefore, any disagreement regarding any aspect of the electoral process must be addressed and resolved using the appropriate procedures prescribed by law.
According to the leaders, if developments persist, they will undermine the fundamental peace and freedom on which the country is founded and now enjoyed by all.
“We therefore unequivocally condemn the acts of violence and lawlessness linked to the declaration of the results of the elections which are being perpetrated. It does not reflect the Ghana we want to build for future generations.
“It is our collective responsibility to ensure that this country remains peaceful and continues to be a beacon of hope in Africa.
“Ghana is our only home, so let’s work together to ensure that, in the words of our national anthem, Ghana remains big and strong.
“Let’s build a Ghana in which we are all happy to live: a Ghana founded on the rule of law, the principles of good governance and which seeks the well-being of its people as a priority.”
