Let me start with a categorical statement: this intervention is not intended to blame any of the factions, so to speak, of the Congress of All Progressives (APC) currently at daggers drawn in Osun State. On the contrary, it is intended to be a little push on all those wronged on both sides of the dispute towards a viable alternative option of peaceful resolution of the thorny issues. It also aims to dwell on the reasons why reason must, out of necessity, prevail in Osun’s politics, especially among members of the same political family.
Thinking deeply, the sky is falling, no one’s word ‘ (The sky is falling, this is not a one-person affair). Already the situation is spiraling out of control, with the setting up of a destructive scene for personal enmity. In war theory, the most difficult war to end is that between brothers; in this case, the products of the same political belly. July 16, 2022 is only a few hours away and the enemy is already waiting at the door, praying fervently and patiently waiting for the wall to open. If APC falls, it will devour everyone, regardless of where the antagonists or protagonists may have pitched their tent.
If we must admit it, stability is the beacon on which the dream of development is nourished. In a stable society, people engage in business and economic activities without fear or hindrance. Not only that, life is also quite predictable, which makes both short and long term planning possible. Ideas and innovations will thrive in a stable environment and the standard of living of an average citizen will improve.
Conversely, endless stories of stopped development, chaos, political leapfrogging, social disorganization, and ultimately anomie become the norm when a society is in disarray. Instability over a period of time leads to the adoption of an atavistic social orientation. In a disorganized social system, barbarism, tyranny and wickedness will replace peace and the space of unity. The elite will be seen as exploiting the masses just as the elite will view the masses as leachate that must be tolerated for the good of mankind. Of course, no government can survive in such a situation. Even if the government has resources, they will be spent.
Basically, a political party is only as good as its structural spending and organizational discipline. For example, the founding fathers of politics in Nigeria like Obafemi Awolowo, Nnamdi Azikiwe and Ahmadu Bello bequeathed “Party supremacy” as a golden rule for the young generation of Nigerians. In other words, once the elders and party leaders have decided how a particular event will unfold, the other members should – and in loyalty would be – support the decision. But then, that would not exclude the possibility of disagreeing without being disagreeable. Implicitly, people can discuss thorny issues and come to reasonable conclusions, which will not only be healthy for our politics, but will also be useful for politics.
History has shown that where acrimony and negative innuendo can flourish, the end result is always an unfortunate disaster. Those who look back will remember that the famous Action group (AG), founded by Awolowo as a center-left party in Ibadan on March 21, 1951, polarized as soon as Samuel Ladoke Akintola’s faction withdrew from the arrangement. In the blink of an eye, “Police team” got down on his knees and he never regained his vigor until the army struck in 1966. In fact, this is what prompted most of the un-appeased members of the old GA to join the Nigeria National Party (NPN) in 1978, to the detriment of the Nigeria Unity Party (UPN). Even Ogbomoso, Akintola’s hometown, never forgave Awolowo. The tragic truth is that political animosity between ‘Awo’ and ‘SALAD’ (as Akintola was affectionately referred to) has now turned to what looks like a generational transfer of hate.
Alliance for Democracy (AD) was also a dynamic party at the start of the Fourth Republic. Even when his alliance with the Party of all Nigerians (ANPP) lost the presidential election People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 1999, she remained a wooing bride for political gladiators. But, as policy wanted, what held its tissues together has been debunked somewhere along the line; and AD shattered into pieces! The PDP also suffered a similar fate in the events leading up to the 2015 general election; and the rest, as they always say, is history!
If one can ask: what did Osun APC learn from Zamfara State (2019); State of Rivers (2019); Oyo State (2019); Edo State (2020); and many others ? Are these material reasons not sufficient to show that ‘a house divided against itself cannot stand’? Isn’t it time that President Muhammadu Buhari, Leader Bola Tinubu, Chief Bisi Akande, General Alani Akinrinade as well as relevant organs of the ruling party have helped to resolve conflicting trends, which are most likely to “To embarrass or have harmful effects on the Party”.
While no one preaches graveyard silence in the face of oppression – real or perceived – loyal party members should appreciate the value of genuine, constructive, problem-based complaints or grievances, and forward them to the appropriate party organs for review. fast resolution. However, it must be free from violence and resentment. Being a social or political movement that sees itself as progressive, the high interest of most of the population should be the goal of its members. A progressive is known to always look at big goals, not personal benefits. Progressives have the greatest ability to reconcile their differences. Of course, this is what sets them apart from other ideological tendencies. Essentially then, if Osun’s development is the key issue, then the “Osun Warriors” should return to the negotiating table. The alternative is that they say “no” and sink together.
Article 9.2 (i) of the PCA Constitution obliges “Party members” to “affirm the aims and objectives of the Party and conduct themselves in a manner which should not bring the party to public stigma and discredit”. In this sense, it is the moment for the Board of Directors of the Party to realize its responsibility to “the mirror of the highest morality of the Party” by intervening in the “disputes and crises” in Osun APC “to ensure its stability”, go forward.
Once again, if “the decisions of” APC National Executive Committee (NEC) “Will be compulsory for all organs and all members of the Party”, why not intervene now that the rapid resolution of the ‘I-follow-Paul’-or-‘ I-follow-Apollos’ sing mockery in Osun APC can be an additional plumage of victory?
And, who says that lasting peace in Osun APC cannot be his gift for the “State of the virtuous” on his 30e birthday?
