More than 300 people in and around Oti and Kuwait, the two suburbs of the Asokwa Municipal Assembly, demonstrated Monday morning to express their dissatisfaction with the abuses inflicted by the Metropolitan Assembly of Kumasi.
The pickets hit dozens of garbage collectors, affecting their daily income as the resident gathered in front of the Oti landfill.
According to them, the KMA has been overseeing the landfill site for about 17 years and has generated millions of revenue cedis, caring little about the lives of local residents.
The severe stink released by the waste piled up on the site caused several respiratory and respiratory diseases, resulting in the death of several people.
According to them, many attempts to get the KMA to carry out continuous fumigation of the area to prevent disease and death have fallen into the ear of death.
Some of the injured protesters who spoke to reporters questioned why the KMA should continue to derive revenue from landfilling waste on the site while they were no longer under the KMA but at the same time. Municipal Assembly of Asokwa (ASMA).

Assembly member of Kuwait-Aprabon-Oti, Elliot Fosu Bannor, who led the residents, said the KMA's stance on this was not only humiliating but bad.
"Just when they learned we'd picket today, they had journalists come on weekends and only fumigated around four houses. Why would anyone want to deliberately avoid his brothers and sisters dying of diseases? " He noted.
According to Mr. Barnor, the KMA has been exploiting Oti residents for too long and the time has come for the residents to resist them in order to save the remaining lives.
He added that the KMA had failed in its responsibility to fumigate the area as agreed with the chiefs and elders before the land was badigned to them as a landfill site.
He therefore called on the KMA Metro Director, Osei Assibey Antwi, to hand over all documentation and contractual details to the Asokwa Municipal Assembly so that the latter could take over and manage the site, which falls within their competence.
"I'm surprised for all this while the KMA has refused to hand over the landfill site to the Asokwa Municipal Assembly so that it manages it and ensures that the stench threatening to cause disease and the death of residents can be handled by the new direction "Mr Barnor pointed out.
From the landfill site, the protesters went to the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, where they petitioned the regional minister.
They warned that if nothing had been done about their petition within two weeks, they would hold a mbad protest to badert their claim.
While reading excerpts from the petition to this journalist, the badembly noted that there had been several discussions with the KMA to entrust the site to Asokwa, but without success.
