The Gers overall victory (2-0) marks a third qualifying round with Midtjylland

The Rangers took revenge on the Progres Niederkorn in the Europa League, without however imposing cruel reprisals, because they beat their former opponent by a draw in Luxembourg.

The Gers were back on the scene of their worst European result so far – a 2-0 defeat that led them 2-1 overall in 2017 – as they returned to Stade Josy Barthel to face the minnows at part-time.

But the nightmare that hit the team of Pedro Caixinha two years ago was not reiterated when he won a 2-0 victory.

Joe Aribo and Sheyi Ojo's strikes on Ibrox last week proved to be a pretty powerful cushion for the team of Steven Gerrard, who staged a showdown in the third qualifying round with Danes Midtjylland.

Scott Arfield nearly settled the tie early as Progres briefly threatened another setback with two half-chances.

But the Gers has stood firm by putting the ghosts of 2017 at rest.

The skipper James Tavernier (200 years in the Gers) and Ryan Jack were the only survivors of this shock. The painful memories of what had happened before were understandable to the nerves of Glasgow's faithful.

They would have been settled in the first 11 minutes if Arfield's shot had taken place rather than hitting the wood.

The Liverpool striker on loan, Ojo, made a small hit in the area, with the goal of Progres No 1, Sebastien Flauss, to drop him.

But Arfield refused to give up and almost killed the tie by pbading the ball between Flauss's legs at an impossible angle, and then see him bounce off the post.

Gerrard admitted that his team was left work after the first leg at Ibrox after only two goals in advance – and that reminded his players when Metin Karayer and Emmanuel Francoise were stuck in the box.

Allan McGregor was not worried, but it was a warning that the Rangers needed to stay focused.

They remained patient pbading pbades around the midfield but the last killer ball that Gerrard hoped did not materialize.

Ojo appeared to be on goal but fell out of the game before Jermain Defoe rejoined him and Borna Barisic added a free kick to the top.

The Rangers were heading for the takeover, but without dominating their opponents, knowing that it was up to Progres to return to the competition.

Again, there was a great opportunity to fix the problem but Connor Goldson was not able to find the target with a head.

Gerrard then held his breath as Niederkorn created the opening to which they aspired.

McGregor could only postpone Mayron De Almeida's shot in the traffic, but Françoise nudged him but Niederkorn captain Sebastien Thill did not take advantage of his shot.

Flauss was forced to fend off Tavernier's free-kick, then Ojo, as Gers tried to regain the advantage.

Defoe was placed in front of Alfredo Morelos, but the English veteran took 74 minutes to pull the trigger, the bbad hits wide.

It was his last participation by the time Morelos was introduced, but the Colombian did not find the last winner because Progres doubled his back to prevent him from banging in the balls after that. Ojo's cutting edge and deception exploited Niederkorn's straining legs.
