Previous attempts at such campaigns and the use of the polio vaccine have met with resistance in some parts of the country, leading to many children not being vaccinated against the disease.

This lack of control has made Pakistan one of three remaining countries – the other two being Afghanistan and Nigeria – still struggling against polio.

More recently, five new polio cases brought the total number to 58 this year. This indicates a strong increase of 383.33% over last year's figure of 12.

Last week, Prime Minister Imran Khan expressed his "concern" at the recent outbreak of polio cases in the country and called on federal and provincial government officials to conduct effective awareness and vaccination campaigns to prevent the spread of polio. to control the disease.

The Prime Minister also announced that he would start running the polio program starting in November.

Lahore

Today we celebrate the first day of the anti-polio campaign in the city. According to district commissioner Saleh Saeed, the campaign will run from August 26 to August 28, during which drops of polio will be administered to 18.5 million children.

More than 5,000 teams are participating in the campaign to ensure that the vaccine reaches as many children as possible.

Assistant commissioners and sub-clerks will be present to monitor the teams and ensure the campaign's effectiveness, Saeed said.

To prevent unrest and ensure the safety of polio workers, strict security measures have also been taken for the teams.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will also attend a three-day anti-polio campaign, inaugurated by Prime Minister Mahmood Khan and Prime Minister Spokesperson for Anti-Polio Measures, Babar Bin Atta, earlier in the day. hospital police lines.

During the campaign – which will cover 27 districts in the region – more than 3 million children should be vaccinated against polio.

Of the 58 cases reported this year, 44 were from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the province has had outbreaks since October 2018.

It is also the region that has shown the greatest resistance to polio vaccine, with parents making false marks on their children to avoid the vaccine.

Balochistan

A seven-day polio campaign will be launched this week in the districts of Naseerabad, Jaffarabad, Jhal Magsi and Sohbat Pur. Radio Pakistan reported.

During this period, more than one million children will receive polio drops.

The campaign, consisting of 4000 teams that will administer polio drops to children on the doorstep The campaign will be overseen by the provincial coordinator of the polio emergency operations center, Rashid Razzaq.
