ISLAMABAD – The Pakistani prime minister has spoken with his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, to congratulate him on giving his party a second term.
A statement from the Foreign Ministry on Sunday said that during the phone call, Imran Khan had expressed hope that the two countries would work closely together to improve their relations.
Tensions between the two nuclear-armed rivals erupted in February, when a suicide bomber against Indian paramilitary forces in the Indian-controlled contested Kashmir killed 40 soldiers.
A few days later, India launched an air strike against a militant group based in Pakistan, Jaishe-e-Mohammed, who had claimed responsibility for the attack.
Pakistan and India have waged two wars in the disputed region of the Himalayas and have regularly engaged in armed skirmishes along the heavily militarized border.
