Parliament rejects motion to absorb tertiary costs

After three postponements, Parliament took the decision to reject the motion presented by Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga seeking to absorb college student fees for the 2021 academic year.

Had the motion been successful, Parliament would have asked President Akufo-Addo to absorb the tuition fees of higher education students as part of relief programs for Ghanaians caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

The minority threw their weight behind the motion while the majority said the decision would be unnecessary as the government has already provided enough education support and interventions in the wake of the pandemic.

But in a majority decision, Parliament voted to reject the motion, but only after heated debate on both sides.

The conclusion was drawn by a voice vote on the floor on Thursday, January 28, 2021.

Following the ruling, Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu said the NPP’s posture will make it difficult for the House to deliberate on upcoming issues.

“It was our first opportunity to have cooperation and from members of the government or the ruling party. This means that they are not ready to cooperate or build consensus, ”he told the media.

Majority leader Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu disagrees, however.

Meanwhile, Ghana Vice-Chancellor President Professor John Gyapong noted that universities would have struggled to function if students were exempted from paying tuition fees for the 2021 academic year.
