Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, Speaker of the Parliament of Ghana, has invited Parliament's Parliamentary Committee to take steps to put in place a pension plan for MPs.
This, he said, would help protect them during retirement, as some former MPs used to lament their poverty after leaving parliament.
Speaking before parliament, Professor Oquaye said Thursday, May 30, 2019 that, despite the advantage of receiving ex gratia payments, some deputies, who, in addition to their basic mandate to legislate, also provide for the maintenance voters find themselves in abject poverty when they leave office.

"The House must seriously consider matters relating to its former members,Prof Ocquaye says.
He explained that they are discussing with the state insurance company about the insurance offer for MPs, adding that: "We all know that the lives of many old members do not match what we would like to see."
He said that it hurt him when he saw the situation of some legislators after the end of their term.

He added that for some deputies, they were not able to return to their profession after leaving Parliament.
"We must therefore look at the reality and provide retreats and other aspects of the well-being of the honorable members," he added.
