Parliament has asked Interior Minister Ambrose Dery to inform the House of the resurgence of armed robberies in the Ashanti region and across the country.
Commuters, particularly those in areas with gold mines, face highway theft, which is a problem for many people.
Talk to Citi News The first Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joe Osei Owusu, said that the Interior Minister was to define a strategy on the issue of insecurity on highways, particularly on sections ranging from Bekwai to Manso Adubia.
"We will provide information on the measures taken to ensure the safety of commuters because crime on this road has increased and is in fact intermittent, but the Bekwai division is responsible for the supervision of this road. They actually erected gates on this road. We want the minister to inform us of the plans in place to put an end to such incidents. "
Several cases of kidnapping were recorded in 2019 alone, with the one of the three Takoradi girls being the most discussed in Ghana.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo recently said that he was determined to fight the growing phenomenon of kidnappings and to ensure that crime does not become a feature of Ghanaian society.
The MP for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, had asked that the Minister of the Interior be summoned following the recent kidnappings.
The Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Aaron Ocquaye, then asked the House leaders to consider inviting Ambrose Dery to inform MPs of the state of security in the country.
