(Web Desk) – The Brazilian police arrested a parrot suspected of having informed the drug traffickers of the raid "Mama, police!"
According to reports in the Brazilian press, the bird would have learned to warn criminals of police operations in Vila Irmã Dulce, a low-income community located in the burnt capital of the state of Piauí, shouting : "Mom, police!"
The parrot, who has not yet been named, was seized Monday afternoon when police rushed into a drug dungeon run by a couple in the area.
"He must have been trained for this," said an officer involved in the operation about the two-winged criminal. "As soon as the police came near him, he started screaming."
A Brazilian journalist who found himself face to face with the parrot imprisoned on Tuesday described him as a "super obedient" creature – a creature though who kept his beak securely closed after being "arrested".
"So far, the sound has not been emitted … completely silent," the reporter said.
Alexander Clark, a local veterinarian, confirmed that the parrot had not cooperated: "A lot of police have gone by and he has not said anything."
Brazilian broadcaster Globo said the "papagaio do tráfico" (parrot of drug trafficking) was given to a local zoo where he spent three months learning to fly before being released.
The bird joins a growing list of animals involved in the drug trade in Brazil, although most are reptiles.
In 2008, police seized two small alligators during a raid on a favela in western Rio de Janeiro, claiming that local gangsters had fed their enemies with the animals.
However, the father of one of the accused gangsters rejected the accusations, alleging that his son's gang had already tried to do so – but the alligator had refused to eat the corpse.
