Partial recount ordered during the presidential election in Malawi

LILONGWE, Malawi – The Malawi Electoral Commission has announced that it can not announce the results of the presidential election until a "transparent counting of ballots" in 10 districts, including the country's commercial center, Blantyre.

The High Court injunction was obtained by the main opposition party, the Malawi Congress, and its candidate, Lazarus Chakwera, among many complaints filed with the commission by various parties over the electoral process.

Previous results of Tuesday's election showed that Chakwera was replaced by President Peter Mutharika, who is seeking a second five-year term.

Corruption and the need for economic growth have been the main electoral problems in Malawi, one of the least developed countries in the world.
