Ghana Education Service has yet to respond to delays
Africa Education Watch says delays in arriving past questions for final year high school students will not affect them as the West African High School Certificate Exam (WASSCE) begins.
The final questions for graduating students, which have cost the nation more than 34 million GHC cedis, have yet to reach most high schools, even though the exam begins today.
The Ghana Education Service has yet to provide responses for the delays.
Speaking to Francis Abban on Morning Starr, Africa Education Watch Executive Director Kofi Asare said students are able to prepare for exams without the previous questions.
“I haven’t heard anything about some of the students receiving previous questions. On Friday we scanned most of the schools and none had received previous questions. We don’t want students to think the above questions are meant to prepare them for a particular job. It shouldn’t be the idea. Past questions are made to shape how you answer questions.
“Last year we raised concerns about the delay in posting previous questions and we were told it was because of # COVID19. Unfortunately, the same is happening this year. The delay in this will not affect the academic performance but our opportunity to spend. It will not affect student performance because previous questions from last year are still in schools, ”he said.
Also commenting on the development, the secretary general of the Ghana National Teachers Association (GNAT), Thomas Musa, said students did not need the previous questions to prepare for the exam.
“We say the system isn’t down, so you don’t fix it. Once in the past these things were given away, let’s say over the next academic year, put them in the cloud and let the students download them.
“If something isn’t broken, why are you fixing it?” Schools and students still have a way to get their old questions from WAEC, and it has not been brought to our attention that the system is down ”.
