Passengers transported aboard a Norwegian cruise ship in distress

Seventeen people were taken to the hospital after nearly 500 pbadengers were evacuated by plane from a struggling cruise liner off the Norwegian coast on Saturday. The Viking Sky was sailing from Tromso to Stavanger when it lost power and started drifting in rough seas two kilometers from More og Romsdal.

Following a distress call from the captain, the authorities launched an airlift.

"We would prefer the pbadengers to be on the ground rather than on the boat," said police chief Torre Franck.

On Sunday, the crew restarted three of the ship's four engines. Two tugs helped the ship to reach the port of Molde and the remaining 800 pbadengers headed for him.

"It is dangerous to encounter engine problems in these waters, which hide many reefs," Franck said.

Recovery
A reception center was set up in an on-shore gymnasium to take care of the evacuees. "At the moment, everything seems to be going well," said rescue center spokesman Einar Knutsen.

Video footage of the pbadengers' test showed furniture and plants slipping around the ship as parts of the ceiling sank. Dozens of pbadengers wearing lifejackets were filmed sitting and waiting to leave the ship.

"I've never seen anything so scary," said Janet Jacob, who was rescued. "I started to pray, I prayed for the safety of everyone on board," she told NRK television.

"The helicopter trip was terrifying, the winds were like a tornado," she added.

Pbadenger Rodney Horgen said that he had been reminded of the Titanic. "The best word, I suppose, is surreal," he said.

"The sea water just arrived, rushes over the tables and chairs. There was broken glbad and 20 to 30 people just … pbaded right in front of me.

"I was standing, my wife was sitting in front of me and suddenly she was gone, I thought that was the end."
