(HealthDay) – Primary care video visits are convenient and can improve the patient-provider relationship, according to a research letter published online April 30 Annals of Internal Medicine.
Mary E. Reed, Dr.P.H., of Kaiser Permanente in Oakland, Calif., And her colleagues interviewed adult patients during a video tour planned to review their experience. A total of 1,274 patients participated in the study, and 1,163 of them reported a planned video visit.
The researchers found that 67% of those who scheduled a video visit had to make one or more arrangements to participate in an office visit. Reasons for planning a video visit included convenience (87%) and visitation experiences (92% reported knowing the provider's history and 84% reported improving the patient-provider relationship). Barriers to video visits included confidentiality issues (11%) and a preference for in-person care (41%). Overall, 82% of the 1,163 respondents who reported a planned video visit completed the visit. Sixty-two percent of patients who did not complete the visit contacted the clinician in any other way, 12% changed their minds or resolved their condition and 26% reported technical obstacles. Thirty-three per cent of patients who visited video indicated that it had decreased the number of in-person visits to offices for the same problem, while 53 and 5% reported having no change. and an increase, respectively.
"Integrated video telemedicine could be a transformative tool to increase access to patient-centered health care," write the authors.
