Paul Adom Otchere
It was revealed that Paul Adom Otchere, host of Metro TV's Good Evening Ghana show, had lobbied the Ayawaso West Wuogon inquiry commission for what she testified before her.
Former Secretary of the Commission, Ernest Kofi Abotsi, made this shocking revelation after Adom Otchere launched a virulent attack on the defunct Commission.
The broadcaster did not take more than four minutes when he appeared before the commission.
The commission explained this by describing it as an "irrelevant witness", but Adom Otchere retaliated, saying the commission's explanation was "illogical".
Speaking Saturday on Newsfile, Mr Abotsi revealed that Good Evening Ghana's host had appealed to a third party to put pressure on the commission so that it would be an audience.
He stated: "Even before appearing on the Commission … the President of the Commission, after evaluating the circumstances of this case, among others, has actually engaged [Paul] that as a rule, he probably should not testify at all …
"The same third-party intermediary contacted me to ask him at least to give him a hearing, because he was still trying to appear …"
He also revealed that Mr. Adom Otchere had met the President of the Commission, Judge Francis Emile Short, who had tried to convince him. [Paul] put aside his intention to speak in public – in front of the cameras.
But the TV host was keen to make a public appearance at the commission charged with unraveling the violence that marred Ayawaso West Wuogon's by-election.
"Even before his appearance at the Commission … the President of the Commission, after badessing the circumstances of this case, among others, has actually engaged [Paul] that, in the order of things, he probably should not at all testify … The same third-party intermediary communicated with me about this request that at least he should at least be heard as he was still trying to appear . .. "Mr. Abotsi revealed on Newsfile on Saturday.
Mr Abotsi pointed out that the Commission "has no interest in anyone coming in but that, in the scheme of things, everyone should be treated according to rational principles".
"Mr. Paul Adom Otchere was one of those who contacted the Commission. In other words, Mr. Paul Adom Otchere has contacted the Commission through someone I do not have to disclose, which is public. The good thing is that there are text messages for this purpose.
"Therefore, if you approach the Commission as an inquisitorial institution, it is interested in all the evidence that will help it in its timely fact-finding mission. So he was allowed to come, "said Kofi Abotsi.
