Former Manchester United and England midfielder Paul Scholes, left his Oldham Athletic manager post after just 31 days.
The 44-year-old driver took over on Feb. 11 and was only responsible for seven games, winning only one.
Scholes said in a statement that he had made the decision with "great regret".
"Unfortunately, it became clear that I would not be able to function as I wished and I was led to believe it before baduming this role," he continued.
Scholes took over with the Latics in 14th place in the table, nine points play-offs, and leaves with them in the same position.
He began his reign with a 4-1 win over Yeovil Town, but three draws and two losses followed before his last game, losing 2-0 to league leaders Lincoln City on Tuesday.
"I was hoping at least to be able to see my initial 18-month term as head of a club that I have supported all my life," he said.
"The fans, the players, my friends and my family all knew how proud and excited I was to take on this role.
"I wish fans, players and staff – who have been great – all the best for the rest of the season and will continue to watch and support the club as a fan."
Scholes made 718 appearances for Manchester United, including 499 in the Premier League, and scored 155 goals in all competitions.
He had originally announced his retirement at the end of the 2010-11 season, but had made a comeback in early 2012 before finally ending his career: he had won 11 Premier League titles, three FA Cup, two league, five two leagues of champions.
He has also played 66 times for England, retiring after Euro 2004 to focus on his club career.

It is understood that Scholes took the post thinking that he would be allowed to manage the team as he pleased.
He resisted any interference from the owner and finally felt that his situation was untenable.
Scholes is really sad to see how it worked. This was clearly not his intention when he took the job.
