Pay your taxes before the GRA comes after you – Akufo-Addo warns non-compliant professionals

President Akufo-Addo has issued a warning to professionals across the country who are shirking their tax obligations.

He said the current situation where around 60,000 professionals in the national workforce do not comply with tax laws is worrying.

He finds it even more embarrassing when lawyers in many jurisdictions, who are supposed to ensure the sanity of clients’ books, instead spearhead the canker, resulting in lost revenue.

“They seem to think that being members of the learned professions puts them above respect for daily civic duties like paying taxes. It is embarrassing that lawyers are often at the top of the list of those who flout our tax laws and use their expertise to avoid paying taxes, ”he said.

The president made the comments during the 2021 Ghana Bar Conference underway in Bolgatanga in the Upper East region.

The theme of this year’s conference is “Ensuring increased revenue mobilization through taxation for accelerated national development: the role of the lawyer”.

Speaking to lawyers on Monday, he called on everyone to take action to regularize their activities before the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) slams the whip.

“They will soon be receiving friendly phone calls from the tax authorities. I sincerely hope that those involved will quickly regularize their fiscal affairs before the GRA does crack the whip, ”insisted the president.

He believes that it is crucial that members of the legal fraternity act on the call of the bugle to accelerate the development of the country.
