The Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Finance and the Ghana Electricity Corporation (ECG) Limited, suspended the Power Distribution Services (PDS) Ghana Limited concession agreement with immediate effect.
A statement from Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah revealed that this decision follows the discovery of fundamental and substantial violations of the PDS obligation to provide payment guarantees (on-demand guarantees) for the transaction, which was discovered during subsequent checks. On-demand guarantees were essential prerequisites for leasing badets as of March 1, 2019 to secure the badets transferred to the concessionaire.
He said that "the government is currently conducting a thorough investigation into this case and its outcome will guide the next plan of action. The government has taken steps to ensure the continuity of distribution, billing and payment services. The general public and customers are badured that this development will not interfere with the distribution of electricity services to customers. "
