The National Peace Council condemned the shooting that left two dead and four injured in Ejura on Tuesday.
In a statement, the Council expressed concern at the number of deaths recorded as a result of the incident and thus called on the security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.
The Council also commended President Akufo-Addo for calling for a public inquiry into the circumstances which led to this unfortunate incident.
“The attention of the National Peace Council was drawn to the shooting incident which allegedly took place in Ejura in the Ashanti region on Tuesday, June 29, 2021. The Council received this unfortunate report in the middle of a dialogue national stakeholder group to chart a course to consolidate the country’s gains beyond the 2020 elections. “
“The Council condemns the unfortunate incident and calls on the relevant agencies to conduct thorough investigations into the matter without delay,” some parts of the statement read.
The statement follows the deaths of two people and the injuries of four others during a protest by youths of Ejura Sekyedumase, which was disrupted by security officials on Tuesday morning.
Things turned turbulent when a joint police and military team accosted the agitated youths demanding justice for the late social activist Kaaka Mohammed.
The Council also expressed its condolences to the families who lost their loved ones as a result of the violent incident.
They encouraged young people and people in the community to stay calm while police investigations continue.
“The Council calls on the media and all those who make statements on this subject, to show maximum restraint in their statements,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo called on Home Secretary Ambrose Dery to conduct a public inquiry into the circumstances that led to the deaths of two people in Ejura on Tuesday, June 29.
A press release signed by Ag. Presidential communications director Eugene Arhin said the president had given the minister ten days to provide a detailed report on the investigation.
“The Minister of the Interior is to provide a detailed report of the investigation, with recommendations for the appropriate measures to be taken by July 9, 2021,” the statement concluded.

On Monday, it was reported that a 40-year-old social activist, who was attacked by an angry mob in Ejura at dawn on Saturday, had died.
The deceased, Ibrahim Mohammed, was assaulted by two assailants, who were reportedly arrested by the police. He was repeatedly hit on the head with objects until he lost consciousness.
This news left many Ghanaians and some young people in Ejura in shock. As others expressed their anger on their online platforms, young people in the region took to the streets to demand justice for the murdered social activist.
The young people stormed the police station Tuesday morning to inquire into the scope of the investigations into the murder of their colleague and #FixTheCountry activist, stressing that they wanted the police to spare no effort to translate the perpetrators in court.
However, things turned turbulent when a joint police and military team accosted the restless youth on the streets where two people were shot dead in the process.
Later that day, the Ghana Police Service released a statement saying its Ashanti Regional Police Command has opened an investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the violent clashes between youth and security personnel at Ejura Sekyedumase. .
The Service said its preliminary investigation shows that following the burial of activist Ibrahim Mohammed alias Kaaka at Mempeasem cemetery in Ejura, the youth blocked the main road to Ejura Atebubu obstructing traffic.
“The police intervened with military reinforcements to calm the situation, but the angry youths loaded the security guards with all kinds of tools, including guns, batons, machetes and stones.
“Security officials fired to disperse the angry crowd who failed to retreat but instead gathered on every street corner. Death and injuries were recorded in the process.
However, Ejura Sekyeredumase MP Braimah Mohammed has called false police claims that young people in the region attacked security agencies during their protest to demand justice for the late activist, Kaaka Mohammed.
According to him, the police statement is an afterthought and an attempt by the security agencies to cover up the fact that they acted unprofessionally when they opened fire on the youngster, resulting in the deaths of both and four others injured.
