A group of Muslims petitioned the National Peace Council for what they say is “the violation of Muslim religious rights at Wesley Girls High School in Cape Coast.”
According to the petition signed by some former students of the school as well as a traditional chief, several months after the promise of the Peace Council to reach an amicable resolution, the commitment has not yet materialized.
It will be recalled that confusion ensued between the school and the Ghana Education Service (GES) over the right of a Muslim student to fast during the feast of Ramadan.
The Muslim student was denied the opportunity to fast due to the school’s long-standing practice of not allowing students to fast for any reason.
The Methodist Church, which originally established the School, later supported this decision.
Several organizations, including the National Peace Council, have tried to find an amicable solution to the problem.
But several months later, the group says it finds it “disturbing and disturbing” that the outcome of the Peace Council’s intervention has not been released to the public.
“From the discussions that followed, it emerged that the problem at Wesley Girls’ High School was not simply preventing Muslim students in the school from fasting, but in fact, constitutionally guaranteed religious rights. of Muslim students are entirely restricted in the school.
“Muslim students at the school are not permitted to: prepare for and perform their five (5) obligatory daily prayers, take leadership roles in the school, including, but not limited to perfection, have their religious script (the Holy Quran) with at school, exercise their constitutional right to associate with other Muslim students in the school and take appropriate clothing (such as veils / hijabs) with them for them prayers at school.
“Indeed, Muslim students at Wesley Girls’ High School are not just blatantly discriminated against at all levels of the school, but they also experience bullying / targeting from other students / prefects, teachers. housekeepers, school chaplains and teachers. They are also obligated to attend obligatory services of the Christian Church, a faith to which they do not subscribe. “
“At the moment, the final year students of SHS are passing their final exams, and one cannot imagine the impact of the denial of religious rights of the Muslim students of the Wesley Girls High School on the Muslim students of the school. We pray that the aforementioned regulations and / or legislation will be communicated to the public as soon as possible, ”the statement added.
