Pep Guardiola will let his players choose the future captain of Manchester City.
The champions of the Premier League need a new leader on the field after the retirement of Vincent Kompany, who has long served at the end of last season.
David Silva has taken the armband for Wednesday's preseason game against West Ham in China, but a decision on a permanent skipper will only be made when the entire team returns from his summer vacation.
City Director Guardiola said: "They will choose the captain when we are all together. After their return, they will meet and decide who will be the captain.
Playmaker Kevin De Bruyne said he would gladly take the role if he received it.
The 28-year-old said, "About the harbor master, I do not know. If the team wants me to be captain or club, I'd be happy to accept that, but I think that's something everyone needs to talk about as a team, as a club.
"We'll talk about it when everyone comes back. Many players are missing at the Copa America and Riyadh (Mahrez) is still participating in the Africa Cup of Nations.
"We will have to do it together because it's a very important job, not only on the field, but off the field."
