Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany will not be awarded a new contract for purely sentimental reasons, said manager Pep Guardiola.
The contract of the 32-year-old Belgian international defender expires at the end of the season.
He has only made 14 appearances for the club this season and is currently marginalized with a muscle problem.
"He's amazing but the reality is that for five years he has played little, really little," Guardiola said.
"This is the situation we need to put on the table and the club will discuss with his agent and make the best decision for both.
"We have no doubt about his quality, we miss him when he can not play.
"It's important, he's our captain and in the field, he gives us a supplement that few central defenders around the world can give us."
Guardiola "not involved" in contractual negotiations
Reports on the weekend City suggested offering Kompany a 12-month extension, but his fitness issues persisted.
He has played only three times since the beginning of November and his last match was won by the win against Liverpool on 3 January.
Kompany arrived in August 2008 from Hamburg and signed a new six-year contract in 2012.
He has been captain of the Blues for three Premier League, FA Cup and three League Cup titles. He will testify next August, after 10 years at the club.
"I'm not involved in the negotiations," Guardiola said.
"I would like to feel that the club knows that the question of feelings is so important.
"It's not important for decision-making, but it has to make them feel – especially for the players who have been here for a long time and who have helped us build what we are now and for newcomers.
"I do not like clubs saying," OK, it's done, go for it ".
"At the same time, there is a time when it's over for everyone, which is why I said, it's not my decision."
"In these cases, like him [Kompany]as Sergio [Aguero]like David [Silva]Like Mr. Toure in the past, it's a decision to make with the club.
"He is very special in many ways, in his personality and in what he has done on and off the pitch.
"He speaks five, six or seven languages, he communicates very well and we need him, the people who represent us are important.
"What they did in the past for new players and new generations, we can say" this guy helped us build the club we are and what we are trying to build bigger or taller " .
