(FOX 7 Austin) – The Centers for Disease Control warns people to wash their hands after handling hedgehogs and their habitats, as pets have been linked to a recent outbreak of salmonella.
According to the CDC, 27 people in 17 states have been infected with salmonella typhimurium. Two were hospitalized but no deaths were reported. A case has been reported in Texas.
18 of the 20 ill people surveyed said they had been in contact with a hedgehog and the outbreak strain was found in samples taken from 10 Minnesota hedgehogs, five of which came from the homes of sick patients.
CDC reminds pet hedgehog owners to wash their hands after handling or cleaning their habitats, not to kiss them or to hug them, not to allow hedgehogs to roam freely in prepared areas or possible food storage.
