Yesterday brought the sad news that legendary Star wars interpreter Peter Mayhew, the man who gave life to co-pilot Wookiee Chewbacca, had died earlier this week. As fans mourn the loss of one of Hollywood's hottest giants, those who knew him best spoke kind words to honor their late friend. Harrison Ford, George Lucas, Mark Hamill, Kathleen Kennedy, Rian Johnson, J.J. Abrams and even more all mingled with their own Peter Mayhew tributes.
First of all, everyone wanted to hear Harrison Ford after the death of Peter Mayhew. The two actors were side by side during most of the original film. Chewbacca played an important role in the success of the films we made together. He knew how much the fans of the franchise were important to his continued success and he was dedicated to it. Millions of others and I will never forget Peter and what he has given us all. My thoughts are with his dear wife Angie and her children. Stay calm, my dear friend …
Indeed, Peter Mayhew has always been grateful and enthusiastic about the love given to Chewbacca over the years. Star wars It's one of those franchises where even actors whose faces you do not see on the screen have become celebrities, and Mayhew was easily one of the most beloved ones. Without Mayhew, Chewbacca is not so kind. Star wars Creator George Lucas echoes these feelings in a statement (via Deadline):
"Peter was a wonderful man. He was the closest to all human beings in a Wookiee: big heart, sweet nature – and I learned to let him always win. He was a good friend and I am saddened by his pbading. "
Current President of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy also offered words to Peter Mayhew:
"We are deeply saddened by the news of the death of Peter Mayhew. Since 1976, Chewbacca's iconic and faithful performance of Peter has been an integral part of the character's success. Star wars saga herself. When I met Peter for the first time the force awakensI was immediately impressed by his kind and gentle nature. Peter has brilliantly been able to express his personality through his clever use of gestures, posture and eyes. We all love Chewie and we must thank Peter for this lasting memory. "

At Star Wars Celebration last month, I had the chance to meet Peter Mayhew in the lobby of my hotel. He was heading to his room and he had come next to me on the scooter, which often drove him where he needed to go. I gently leaned over to introduce myself, and he could not have been nicer or more receptive. After decades of that, you thought that fan worship could get a little awkward, especially when you started to grow up over the years, but Mayhew took it all with a smile.
Peter Mayhew will be missed, but his legacy lives in the advice he gave to Joonas Suotamo, the new Chewbacca:
