Philippe Coutinho could have played his last game for Barcelona after suffering another setback that could see him miss the rest of the season with injury.

The Brazilian left Liverpool on a record-breaking deal with the club in January 2018 but went through a miserable spell in Spain as he struggled to recreate his Anfield form.

Barcelona tried to sell the 28-year-old in the summer of 2019 but couldn’t find a buyer and he ended up spending the season on loan at Bayern Munich.

Despite winning the treble, Coutinho’s playing time in Bavaria was limited by injury and the Bundesliga giants decided not to sign him permanently after his parting role.

Given a second chance at Camp Nou by Ronald Koeman after returning to Spain, the playmaker was the first choice under the Dutchman in the first half of the season as he made 14 appearances.

However, he hasn’t played since December after breaking his meniscus.

He underwent surgery at the time, but has now been forced to go under the knife again for arthroscopy in his native Brazil, and is unlikely to be available by the end of the season. .

The club tweeted from their official account: “@Phil_Coutinho had a meniscal cyst in his left knee successfully operated on by Dr Rodrigo Lasmar, under the supervision of the club’s medical services team.

“Coutinho is absent and his recovery will determine his availability.”

With Barcelona struggling financially, Coutinho faces an uncertain future at the club once again this summer.

And if he is indeed ruled out for the remainder of the season, he might well have played his last game for the Catalans if they managed to offload him to help counter rising debts at the end of the season.
