Philippines: Dengue fever in Leyte, Samar and Iloilo

Officials from the Ministry of Health in Eastern Visayas (Region 8), which includes Samar, Leyte and Biliran, report an 86% increase in the number of people with dengue fever compared to the same period in 2018.

From January 1 to July 11 of this year, 4,809 confirmed cases, including 19 deaths were recorded. 2,590 cases were reported last year at this time.

John Paul Roca, DOH Regional Information Officer, said the countless cases that have occurred since last year are very alarming.

"We need to strengthen active monitoring in all reporting sites. We provided badistance to local government units through a mbadive information campaign, mothers' rally, and fogging and nebulization activities, "said Roca.

Iloilo

The provincial health office in Iloilo reported that the number of dengue cases had increased by 1,129 in just one week.

Iloilo recorded a total of 5,435 cases and 20 deaths between January 1 and July 6 this year. The city of Pototan still has the highest number of registered cases – 489 with three deaths.

At the national level, as of 15 June, the authorities reported a cumulative number of 92,267 cases and 398 deaths. This figure is higher than that of 50,145 cases and 275 deaths reported during the same period last year.
