The announcement of Phoebe Waller-Bridge's recruitment to tweak the script for James Bond's twenty-fifth film was greeted with relief by anxious fans of the bumpy pre-production of the film.
Waller-Bridge, whose second highly successful Fleabag season has just started his US tour, was invited to host a screenplay that had already been the subject of several projects, apparently at the direct request of the star, Daniel Craig.
Addressing Deadline, Waller-Bridge downplayed its central importance in the scenario, but confirmed that it was seriously addressing the character's gender policy. "We talked a lot about whether or not [the Bond franchise] is relevant now because of its identity and the way it treats women, "she said. "I think it's bullshit, I think it's absolutely relevant now.
"He must just grow up. It just has to evolve and the important thing is that the film deals with women properly. he is not obliged. He must be faithful to this character. "
The second woman in the history of the franchise to obtain credit for her screenplay, after Johanna Harwood, co-author of Dr. No in 1962 and From Russia With Love in 1963, Waller-Bridge went on to state that She wanted the female characters in the short film "to feel like real people".
"I just want to make sure that when they have pbaded these pages, that Lashana [Lynch]Lea [Seydoux] and Ana [de Armas] open them and go away: "I can not wait to do that." As an actress, I rarely had that feeling early in my career. It gives me a lot of fun, knowing that I give it to an actress. "
Cary Fukunaga will direct the 25th James Bond movie, which has no title yet, and will follow Danny Boyle's departure due to "differences in creativity" last year. Boyle recently confirmed rumors that these differences were related to the scenario he and his collaborator John Hodge wrote.
Production was delayed to allow Bond veterans Neil Purvis and Robert Wade to write a new script; this was later reviewed by Scott Z Burns, Bourne Ultimatum writer. Filming finally began in late April, but was suspended 15 weeks later, following a serious ankle injury suffered by Daniel Craig.
Waller-Bridge said she was long drawn to Craig's portrayal of the character. "When I saw her Bond for the first time, her performance was very fun, which I really liked," she said. "I was so excited to be writing a dialogue for him. I mean, the script was there. It's already here. I think it's unfair to say that I write the script. "
Bond 25 presents Rami Malek, Bohemian Rhapsody star, alongside Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris, Ben Whishaw and Rory Kinnear.
According to Baz Bamigboye of the Daily Mail, the new script is about genetic engineering. Waller-Bridge was chosen in part because she could understand it. "There are not many people in the world who are brave enough to bring humor to genetics and the human genome project," said the Bamigboye source.
