Phones to replace myki cards in Vic

Victorians will be able to use their Android smartphones to pay for their commute by public transport starting Thursday.

But iPhone users will have to wait for the mobile option because the Victorian government has not yet reached an agreement with Apple.

Public Transport Victoria will put a system in use Thursday morning to allow Android smartphone users to use their devices instead of a myki physical card when they will take a train, a tram or a bus.

The introduction of the technology, which will use Google Pay, follows a successful test.

Commuters will be able to manage their myki accounts within the app.

"Mobile myki will make recharging and traveling easier and easier to travel," said Transportation Minister Melissa Horne on Sunday.
