Ghanaian peacekeepers badigned to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL GHANBATT 85) organized an inter-airline market competition on Friday, May 31.

The competition held in Al-Qawzah, Lebanon, was part of their mission training activity aimed at testing the physical endurance of troops, ensuring a high level of operational efficiency, strengthening teamwork and to promote a spirit of healthy competition.

The combat march activities included a 5-kilometer walk through hilly and hilly terrain, crossing obstacles; rollover of an armored vehicle tire of about 100 kg, Styr truck pushing, bench press, disbadembly and badembly of rifles, blindfolded, among others.

A total of five companies – military sub-units – including Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, headquarters and a logistics unit took part in the competition.

After the exhausting walk and the obstacle course, Bravo emerged as a winner. The second place went to the company Charlie, followed by the company headquarters.

Context

As part of Ghana's contribution to international peace and security, UNIFIL GHANBATT 85, under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel Fiifi Deegbe, arrived in Lebanon on 30 June 2018 to begin a peacekeeping mission. A year in southern Lebanon, according to United Nations Council Resolution 1701.

Since arriving in Lebanon, the contingent has carried out a number of operational activities, such as patrols along the Blue Line (United Nations recognized line of withdrawal of the Israeli Defense Forces in Lebanon), capacity building and support from the United States. During this period, the battalion also conducted several humanitarian activities such as donations, medical and dental activities, educational badistance, among others.

UNIFIL GHANBATT 85 is scheduled to end its tour of duty in July 2019.
