A pig slaughter was carried out on a farm in Shiga prefecture, in western Japan, following an outbreak of swine fever.
Prefectural authorities said that about 700 pigs from Omihachiman's farm were slaughtered until Thursday morning.
The reform began after the farm pigs tested positive for the highly contagious and generally deadly disease on Wednesday. Swine fever is not harmful to humans even though it eats meat from infected animals.
The infected pigs were among the 60 that had been shipped on January 31 from another farm in Aichi Prefecture, central Japan, also hit by swine fever.
According to officials, the slaughtered pigs are buried in a breeding center located about twenty kilometers from the farm.
Swine fever has spread to five prefectures in Japan since the confirmation of the first case in 27 years in Gifu prefecture, central Japan, last September.
