Plan International Ghana called for a rapid transformation of training systems to develop the knowledge, skills and creativity needed to secure the future of young people in Ghana.
According to Plan Ghana, transformative training will enable young people to gain decent jobs to support themselves, their families and the nation as a whole.
Graduate Speaking at a graduation ceremony for 50 out-of-school youth who received training in cell phone repair on January 20, 2021 in Nsawam as part of the Youth Employment and Empowerment Project (YEEP ), jointly implemented by Plan Ghana and MTN Ghana, Plan International Ghana’s IT director, Maud Tsagli, said the project was designed to provide well-thought-out sustainable solutions to empower young people, especially young women , to participate in this field traditionally regarded as a field dominated by men.
“At Plan International Ghana, we believe it is important to equip young people with skills in employment and sustainable entrepreneurship for young women and girls, in line with SDG goal 8, which calls for growth. decent economy, ”she said.
YES The project, which graduated 14 women and 36 young men after undergoing an intensive 10-day training course, gave beneficiaries certificates of participation, start-up tools and kiosks to start working.
Areas covered by the training program included repairing and correcting cell phone failures, how to maintain a safe and secure working environment, introduction to mobile phone technology, basic customer service and frontal repairs.
Ms Tsagli expressed the fear that “despite the fact that the development of technical or professional skills and entrepreneurship are increasingly recognized as engines of economic and social development, especially among young people, it still faces challenges. some challenges. ” She said that one of the main challenges facing technical and vocational education education is that technical education suffers from low esteem, low appreciation and low attractiveness.
But for her, the YEEP was specifically designed to provide opportunities for skills development and decent employment for young people for male and female beneficiaries and expressed hope that the training will help beneficiaries to be economically independent since they will be given all the necessary logistics to start their own business.
“Today you are armed with one of the most important tools needed to chart your course. I’m not talking about the certificate and the starter kits – it’s about what you learned along the way and what you do with the education you gained on your journey to graduation today. ‘hui,’ she noted.
MTN’s commitment MTN Foundation Board Member Ms. Nabilla Williams said MTN Ghana Foundation has committed GH ¢ 445,000 to support the training of 100 young women and men in Nsawam and Suhum in the Eastern region.
She expressed hope that the YEEP initiative will provide employable skills to the many people who will benefit from them.
“We are convinced that this intervention will help reduce youth unemployment and contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 8,” she said.
Recommendation The Municipal Director General of the Adoagyiri Municipal Assembly, Mr. Isaac Kwadwo Buabeng thanked the MTN Ghana Foundation and Plan International Ghana for their support.
“It is such a relief to see young men and women who are committed to developing and securing their future through hard work,” he added, and called on organizations and institutions, in the part of their corporate social responsibilities, to invest in such programs to compliment the Assembly’s efforts to promote grassroots development.
