A low-fat plant-based diet came out on top over the Mediterranean in a study observing weight and cholesterol results.
The essay featured in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition. It took 62 “overweight” participants and assigned them one of two diets over four months.
Positive plant results
It measured body weight, plasma lipids, blood pressure and body composition. Additionally, the study looked at insulin resistance.
The results showed that dieters lost almost 4 kg more body fat on the vegan diet. They also had a drop in visceral fat, which is the fat surrounding the internal organs.
Although there was no significant change in cholesterol in the Mediterranean diet, those who ate herbal did drop their levels by 18.7 mg.
Blood pressure decreased on both regimes, with the Mediterranean having recorded the greatest reduction.

Dr Hana Kahleova helped conduct the study. She is also director of clinical research for the Committee of Physicians for Responsible Medicine (PCRM).
The PCRM is a non-profit organization of 12,000 doctors.
“Previous studies have suggested that Mediterranean and vegan diets improve body weight and cardiometabolic risk factors. But, until now, their relative efficacy had not been compared in a randomized trial ”. Said Dr Kahleova.
The study proved that a vegan diet is more effective at improving health markers and boosting weight loss – because it’s associated with reduced calorie intake and fat intake, she said. added.
