The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has purchased 21 horses for the mounted squadron unit (MSU), which will be used during ceremonial programs and for crowd control.

Before the horses arrived, the police sometimes rented horses for ceremonies.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. David Asante-Appeatu, has since returned to the unit of the squadron on horseback in Osu to inspect the new horses.

Transformation agenda

The IGP stated that the purchase of horses was part of the transformation program initiated by the GPS, which was supported by the government to reorganize the MSU so that it could play its role in ceremonial programs and control of crowds.

Even though the MSU is one of the important units of GPS, it has been neglected over the years.

Until recently, the unit had only four horses and therefore had to hire horses.

Mr. Asante-Appeatu urged staff at the unit to work diligently to enhance the image of the service.

He added that with the arrival of horses, the unit would no longer have to use rented horses to perform its duties.

Recommendation

The commander of the MSU, DSP Daniel Carlos Atongnab, congratulated the police department and the government for buying the horses.

He said it would help the staff a lot to do their job well.

DSP Atongnab, however, called on the GPS to stop the encroachment on MSU lands, which were taken over by private developers.

ACP David Eklu, Director of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police, urged the MSU to take good care of the horses.
