Police deny security of NDC Youth Wing for July 6 protest

The police department notified the National Democratic Congress (NDC) informing it that it will not be able to offer protection to its youth wing for its demonstration scheduled for July 6.

According to the Deputy Commander of the Police of the Accra region, DCOP EA Sakyi, the service is unable to provide security due to Executive Instrument (EI) 395 still in force and article 4 of the 1994 Law on Public Order (ACT 49).

“The Accra Regional Police Command has acknowledged receipt of your letter dated June 30, 2021 on the above subject and wishes to inform you that the restrictions imposed by Executive Instrument (E. I) 395 to contain the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic are still in effect. not been lifted. The Regional Command also refers you to article 4 of the 1994 law on public order (law 49) concerning in particular public health.

“The Command therefore cannot provide you with the necessary security during your planned demonstration and street demonstration, please,” its press release said.

The NDC youth wing on Wednesday notified police of its intention to launch a protest next week Tuesday from 8 a.m. to noon in Accra.

The protest dubbed “A March for Justice” aimed to “demand justice for all those killed and brutalized by acts of violence and / or state sponsored adventurism by police and military forces”.

Meanwhile, despite the police decision, the party’s national youth organizer George Opare Addo has indicated that the July 6 protest will take place as scheduled.

He accused the police of sleeping on their basic tasks and of turning the security service into a political agency.

“In recent times, the Ghana Police Service has failed in its fundamental responsibilities to all citizens of our beloved country in blatant disregard of its duty. The Ghana Police Service has morphed into a political agency used by the government for its partisan bidding. “

In addition, Mr. Opare Addo noted that there is no curfew imposed in the Greater Accra region by Interior Minister Ambrose Dery, therefore, they will embark on their planned protest.
