The New York couple who disappeared in the Dominican Republic is presumed dead after police found two bodies corresponding to their descriptions, officials said Tuesday.

Portia Ravenelle, 52, and Orlando Moore, 40, were scheduled to return to Mount Vernon, New York, on March 27. Police said that Ravenelle and Orlando had not taken their flight to Newark. back to the United States.

Authorities now suspect that tourists may have crashed their car into the sea by going to the airport.

Colonel Frank Flix Durn Mejia, the Dominican police spokesman, told CBS that a car had been found at the bottom of the sea in the area where the couple had been seen.

"We can not confirm the characteristics of the vehicle because of rough seas and our divers are struggling to reach the depths," he said.

Local fishermen said they heard a loud road noise early in the morning of March 27, police said in his report.

A badly wounded woman who was not wearing any ID was subsequently found near this place and taken to the hospital, the police said. She died after spending six days in intensive care.

Authorities then discovered the partially decomposed body of a man in Sans Souci, about 21 km from the car. The man wore a tattoo on his right arm marked "Milano", which is Moore's description, CBS reported.

The bodies are being identified and autopsies are being conducted, reported CNN. Authorities said Tuesday earlier that they did not suspect a criminal act in the disappearance of the couple.
