An Accra circuit court on Tuesday sentenced Corporal Raymond Amegashie of the Ghana Police Service and three others to a 70-year prison term.

The policeman and the three men stole 45,000.00 GHC and 1,000 USD in a supermarket in Nungua, Accra, under threat of weapons.

In its final verdict, the court presided over by Aboagye Tandoh stated that he was pronouncing sentence according to the role played by each of the accused in the robbery.

The court sentenced Corporal Amegashie to 20 years of forced labor; Ibrahim Ayirebo, auto mechanic, at 18 years of imprisonment; Bright Dorkanu, a colleague of the driver and Stanley Akorli, a driver were sentenced to 16 years of imprisonment each.

It was after the court found them guilty of robbery and robbery charges. The four men executed the act around 12:00 pm on December 12, 2017.

The court further ordered that the GHC 19,420.00 and USD 600 recovered from the defendants be reimbursed to the plaintiff, Hellen Asante.

He noted that prosecutions after the summons of four witnesses had proved without hesitation the cause of conspiracy and robbery.

The court said that Amegashie was at the head of the gang, Ayirebo was the leader and Dorkanu was the organizer. In the Akorli case, the court called him a liaison officer during the robbery of 12 December 2017.

During the trial, the court found that the convicts had planned to rob a mobile money vendor, but that this had been foiled, which is why they planned to rob the complainant on December 12, 2017.

Pleading for mitigation, Paul Asabi Abarigah, who represented Corporal Amegashie, urged the court to treat his client indulgently as he was young and had years ahead of him.

Mr. Abarigah stated that the court should take into account the remorse that his client and his accomplices had shown during the trial. If the court had warned them, "Stop sinning, they would have jumped on the occasion."

According to the lawyer who would grant them minimum sentences, convicts would have the opportunity to reintegrate into society.

Kwame Oppong, who represented Akorli, described his client as a victim of the circumstances and called for a lenient sentence.

He said that his client had learned his lesson.

Chief Public Prosecutor Victor Dosoo had previously stated that the plaintiff, Ms. Asante, was a merchant who operated a grocery store near the Nungua Agricultural Development Bank (ADB).

Chief Inspector Dosoo said that Amegashie was stationed at the Tema SWAT unit, Ayirebo residing at Tema Community One, Dorkanu also residing in Ashiaman and Akorli at Tema Gulf City.

On December 12, 2007, the prosecution said around 9 pm that the four accused, who were now convicted, had planned to embark on a series of robberies.

According to the prosecution, Amegahsie, in charge of custody at Glotee Ghana, has abandoned his post with his AK47 rifle and 20 rounds. Ayirebo is also armed with a pistol.

According to the prosecution, Amegashie and Ayirebo boarded a taxi registered GX 9514-13, driven by Akorli, and then went to the complainant 's store in Nungua. Dorkanu joined them later.

The prosecution stated that Amegashie, Ayirebo and Dorkanu were taken out of the vehicle and entered the complainant's shop in the midst of sporadic gunfire and stole 45,000 GHC and 1,000 USD.

After the incident, the accused boarded the vehicle and rushed to Tema, while the complainant reported the incident to the police.

Ayirebo, Dorkanu and Akorli were arrested at the Abattoir community police gate where 19,500.00 GHC and 600 USD were recovered.

The prosecution said that Amegahsie managed to escape with his AK 47 rifle and spent the night at the Tema Round Round About, before returning his rifle to his unit the next day.

According to the prosecution, Amegashie tried to escape arrest at the Tsopoli police fence, but he was arrested.
