Ibrahim Idris, acting Inspector General of Police, said today that police personnel who will be deployed in the polling centers will not be allowed to carry firearms.

This, even though he said that adequate security arrangements had been made to protect the staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission, the INEC officials, election materials, facilities and voters.

The police chief met in Abuja when a delegation from the European Union and the EU Election Observation Mission to Nigeria visited him.

According to him, as long as the elections were going to last, the security personnel would monitor the polling stations to ensure that the restrictions on movement and other rules were respected, as stipulated in the electoral law.

Adamu badured that the force, in collaboration with other security agencies, would ensure security in the various centers from the beginning to the end of the elections.

He said: "Your presence here in Nigeria to follow the process will credit the fact that an appropriate arrangement has been made or otherwise," he said.

"We have done a lot for the security and training of our staff in the elections.

"Your mission to Nigeria is very important because every Nigerian will want credible elections."

Earlier, the head of the delegation, Domini Howell, said the visit was aimed at determining the level of police preparedness for the elections.

He said, "We know that security is important during elections. We want to meet you and know your activities on election day.

Ms Howell said the EU had 11 people in Nigeria for a month to monitor the level of preparation for the general elections.

She explained that the union currently has 40 people on the ground, adding that on election day, "no less than 120 would be on the ground and EU embbadies would participate".
