Police put an end to the disorder and arrest four ringleaders

The Ghana Police Service confirmed the arrest of four people involved in violent protests in Odododiodioo constituency on Saturday, September 18.

A police statement released later Saturday said the quartet had been arrested for allegedly causing public unrest in Jamestown in Accra.

The four, according to police, had led dozens of people to block a road in Jamestown by burning car tires, causing further fear and panic.

“Preliminary inquiries suggest that the illegal demonstration was in response to the widely circulated list of potential Metropolitan, Municipal and District (MMDCE) heads of government,” the statement read in part.

The Jamestown incident was specifically about who will become Accra’s next mayor. Protesters were acting in support of outgoing mayor Mohammed Adjei Sowah. According to reports, it will be replaced.

Adjei Sowah himself issued a statement on Saturday denouncing any violence on his behalf.

Police further cautioned all persons belonging to groups intending to illegally protest against the list or any other matter to abandon these plans or face the law.

“It has come to my attention that some people are demonstrating in the Odododiodio constituency in anticipation of the MMDCE announcement by the Minister of Local Governments tomorrow. I unequivocally denounce any form of disturbance on my behalf.

“As responsible citizens, we must recognize the power of the president to appoint people of his choice to promote his agenda and it is our duty to support those appointed to succeed,” he said in a statement. press dated September 18.
