The drama unfolded Monday in Odawna, Accra, when an alleged armed robber descended into a tunnel filled with effluents to escape his pursuers and refused to go out, despite the authorities' efforts from the city to get him out.
The police, who later arrived at the scene, used various tactics, including warning shots to scare the alleged burglar from his refuge, but to no avail.
All tunnel exits were blocked to prevent the suspect from escaping.
The police had to go down into the tunnel to engage the fighter with a knife and other tools, before he was finally mastered and trained, much to the delight of the crowd gathered to witness this so rare spectacle .
The operation took about six hours to the police.

The suspect, allegedly stealing 50,000 GH ¢, jumped into Odaw 's drain to escape the crowd' s attack.
He later managed to settle in the tunnel for security reasons.

Witness account
According to eyewitnesses, the suspect was seen fleeing after being stabbed yesterday at around 6:30 am He allegedly stabbed a woman and took away 50,000 GH ¢.
He was eagerly pursued by a crowd who wanted to lynch him.
Feeling the danger, the suspect jumped into Odaw's drain, went through the sewage in a tunnel located in the drain filled with effluent and hid there for nearly six hours.
The incident, which drew a large crowd, caused an unusual stalemate on Graphic Road.
All "diplomatic" police efforts to bring the suspect to surrender proved futile, as he was not ready to surrender easily.
Although some volunteers dared to go down into the water collector, they did not have the courage to chase the suspect into the tunnel because of the threat of stabbing anyone who tried to tempt him.
The police eventually had to resort to tear gas and shots to try to scare them from their hiding place.
In the space of about seven minutes, four shots were fired into the tunnel, making everyone believe that the suspect, had he not died, would surrender.
He was finally shot around 13:05. and sent to the Accra Central Police Station for investigation.
