The Ghana Police Service has announced that it is putting in place urgent additional security measures in the Greater Accra region as part of efforts to tackle an apparent increase in theft cases.

There have been reports of at least four daylight robberies in parts of the capital this week.

In one case, the thieves opened fire, leaving a passerby with gunshot wounds.

The thieves in all the incidents took away huge sums of money.

The cheeky nature and style of operation became a source of concern to eyewitnesses.

Subsequently, in a statement, the police called on the public to support the police regarding the enhanced security measures to deal with this threat.

The Service also urged public and commercial institutions intending to withdraw and deposit huge sums of money to exercise caution or contact the police for assistance with such transactions.

The police added that they had granted a financial reward of 50,000 yen for the information which will lead to the arrest of the thugs.
