A body found in the wreckage of a plane in the English Channel has been identified as that of Emiliano Sala, according to a Dorset police statement.

The plane, which was carrying the 28-year-old Argentine footballer and 59-year-old pilot David Ibbotson, disappeared from the radar near Guernsey two weeks ago.

A private search team spotted Sunday the missing plane on the seabed and confirmed that the body of one of the occupants had been seen in the wreckage. It was confirmed Wednesday that a body had been found.

Dorset police issued a statement on Thursday that "the body transported to Portland Harbor today has been officially identified by the coroner for Dorset as that of professional footballer Emiliano Sala.

"The families of Mr. Sala and pilot David Ibbotson have been updated and our thoughts remain with all of them."

Sala disappeared on January 21st as he was traveling to Cardiff from Nantes after finalizing a transfer agreement to join the Premier League club.

An official search of the Piper Malibu aircraft was canceled after three days and Guernsey Harbor Captain David Barker said the chances of finding survivors were "extremely remote".

After a crowdfunding campaign, the couple's search was reopened on 27 January and, in conjunction with a privately funded vessel, the Air Accident Investigation Directorate began to explore an area approximately 24 nautical miles north of Guernsey Sunday morning.

Cushions likely to come from the plane were discovered last Wednesday on a beach in France near Surtainville, in the Cotentin Peninsula.

Investigations continue to establish what happened to the plane, while the AAIB is expected to issue an interim report in the coming weeks after consulting the families of the missing men and the police.
