Accra, April 30, GNA –
The "Cybercrime" Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the
Ghana Police Services, warned the public against the activities of
cybercriminals, who use social engineering to steal data from
unsuspecting individuals and businesses.

Dr. Herbert Gustav
Yankson said the main threat to Ghana's cybersecurity space lay in social dialogue.
engineering.

He noted that the
The situation was worrying because it was considered long-term, imploring
this focus should be on that to reduce the threat.

Social engineering
crimes involve the use of deception to obtain the privacy of the person
identification information.

Often, the
rogue would use a fake survey or other social study device that would lead
the person to believe that the investigation is real.

This can happen through
phone calls, emails or other computer communications, social media websites
and text messages.

Dr. Yankson did that
known in a workshop to mark; "Girls in ICT" in Accra.

The event, which was
organized by the Ghana Section of the Internet Society (ISOC) on the theme:
"Digital Security and Confidentiality – Focus on Social Engineering".

Dr. Yankson said social
engineering was considered long-established;
adding that: "Nowadays, it is better to be on guard, especially
women and girls ".

He said in 2018,
statistics show that fraud ranks first in the anti-cybercrime unit;
stating that 60% of their registered cases involved fraud.

"Fraud is
basically using deception and that's where social engineering comes in. If
most of our cases are fraud-related, so they're based on all
different types of social engineering, "he said.

"By the social
engineering, our ladies have things that guys want to see, and about 98 to 99
percent of the indicators are that our ladies take a lot of pictures and
it means we have a lot of work to do. "

Dr. Yankson also
revealed that badtorsion ranked third with 15% of all
case.

"The threat to our
cybersecurity in this country goes through social engineering, and that's what
we should be working on it, "he added.

He revealed that
2018, Ghana lost $ 105 million against cybercrime, which included 21 frauds
millions of dollars and badtors $ 49,000.

Which means that the total
about 22 million dollars were taken away from victims through social
engineering.

Mr. Marcus Adomey,
The president, ISOC Ghana, said that there was a common misconception that the cybercriminal
use only advanced tools and techniques to hack computers
or accounts.

"It's just not
true. The cybercriminals have learned that the easiest way to steal information,
hacking accounts or infecting a system is simply by prompting users to make a
mistake, "he added.

Mr. Adomey stated that
The 2015 report of a study by Vormetric showed that 90% of people
% of cyber-violations.

He said studies also
showed that almost 70% of information thefts were consciously or
unconsciously within the organization.

"Indeed, the
The weakest link, in most cases, is unfortunately the users themselves, "he said.
